Sutherland’s New York Office Pro Bono Triple Crown

November 25, 2013

Sutherland’s proud tradition of pro bono and public service leadership was recognized recently in New York where three associates were honored for their hard work and the favorable results they achieved.

Travis Mock, an associate in the litigation practice, received an award from the New York Legal Aid Society for his work litigating to keep a severely ill and indigent woman and her son from being evicted from their apartment based on allegations that they conspired with the managing agent to enter a fraudulent rent-stabilized lease. After three years of litigation, Travis achieved a settlement that secured our client’s right to remain in the apartment for four more years and that released her from liability for over $70,000 in alleged rent arrears.

Justin Kitchens, an associate in the insurance practice, received the Golden Biking Award from Sutherland pro bono client, Bpeace (The Business Council for Peace), at the organization’s annual meeting in recognition of his fundraising prowess. Justin, who had done legal work for Bpeace in the past, was recruited by Cynthia Shoss who is the Bpeace relationship partner to participate in Pedal for Peace, a bike-a-thon for Bpeace in October. Justin, with the generous support of Sutherland attorneys, raised $3,245 for the organization. It should be noted that his fundraising skills far outmatch his navigation skills, as Justin and his cycling partner got lost and came in last in the actual bike race! Bpeace is a non-profit network of business professionals who volunteer skills to entrepreneurs in conflict-affected countries to help them create significant employment for all and expand the economic power of women. Joshua Borden, also an associate in the insurance practice, was recognized by Lawyers Alliance for New York “for vital pro bono legal services to help communities in the aftermath of [Superstorm Sandy].” Immediately following Superstorm Sandy, Lawyers Alliance urgently sought out Sutherland for our insurance expertise to draft a legal alert to small business owners concerning potential insurance coverage for the devastating damage caused by the storm. Within hours after the storm, Josh, working with New York insurance partner John Pruitt, drafted the legal alert, which addressed issues such as (i) determining if insurance would cover property damage from the storm; (ii) potential recovery for lost profits through business interruption coverage and loss of ingress/egress provisions; and (iii) timely notification of losses to insurance agents and brokers.

Sutherland is also sponsoring an Equal Justice Works Fellow at Lawyers Alliance. The 2013-15 Fellow is Kelsey Ripper, a recent graduate of Fordham University School of Law. Ms. Ripper will play an important role in the new Urban Health initiative at Lawyers Alliance.

“We could not be prouder of these three lawyers for their dedication and commitment to serving those in need and helping their community, “ says Cynthia Shoss, a partner in the New York Office and member of Sutherland’s Pro Bono Committee. “They represent the best of Sutherland and the best of the legal profession.
