2011 Sales and Use Tax Symposium

September 25, 2011 - September 28, 2011

Institute for Professionals in Taxation

Sutherland Partners Stephen P. Kranz and Eric S. Tresh are presenting at the Institute for Professionals in Taxation’s 2011 Sales and Use Tax Symposium on September 25-28. Stephen will present the topic, "Taxing Service as Tangible Personal Property, Can the States Do It?" This session focuses on the taxation of digital products and discusses legislative trends, the application of existing sales and use tax imposition to these new products and services, and the application of sourcing rules, including methods of apportioning the base.

Eric will discuss "Old Tax Laws Applied to New Technologies." New technologies and services are coming to market faster than ever, and state tax laws are not changing fast enough to keep pace. Companies now have to make complex tax decisions based on outdated laws. This session discusses an approach to these challenges and provides advice on potential pitfalls associated with these issues.
