Carbon Trade, Finance and Trends Conference

June 13, 2008

Sutherland Partners Gerald J. Pels and Paul B. Turner are participating in the Carbon Trade, Finance and Trends Conference, June 13, 2008, in Washington DC.  Gerry is presenting on a panel entitled "Bali, Rio & Kyoto Agreements."  This panel will provide an overview of the conference in Bali, the Rio Treaty and Kyoto Protocol and address the ongoing nature of the developments, international cooperation and future trends.  Paul is chair of the "Financial & Legal Issues" panel.  The panel will discuss the U.S. legislative process and bills and their function in tackling climate change issues, GhG and carbon emissions, and will propose new legislative initiatives for a U.S. emissions trading scheme.  It will address the current status and recent developments of the North American Futures and OTC markets as they relate to carbon trading and other emissions.  Discussion will be on the types and relative liquidity of emissions futures contracts currently being traded on the various U.S. exchanges and OTC market.

Sutherland is a proud sponsor of the conference, which will address the issue of carbon trading and finance in the U.S.  It will provide an overview of the main agreements in this area, present a comparison with the emissions trading schemes in the EU and other countries, and put forth the latest trends to reduce greenhouse gases and carbon emissions.  The conference will bring together practitioners, in-house legal personnel, executive officers and regulatory policy advisors to exchange information of practical relevance.
