Sutherland is a proud sponsor of "The Role of the Media in the Liberia Civil War," a panel discussion among award-winning journalists who covered Liberia’s conflict which ended in 2003. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Carter Center’s Ivan Allen Pavilion in Atlanta, Georgia.
The role of the media in covering Liberia’s civil war was highly contentious: various media documented human rights abuses with little to no response from the international community and media coverage at times intensified local divisions, fueling further conflict. There were perceived differences between local and international coverage as well. While foreign correspondents were perceived to be objective, they were criticized for their inability to cover "real" local issues. Comparatively, local and regional reporters claimed access and "truer" knowledge of issues, but overt – if not forced – partisanship often compromised their credibility.
Panelists include Matthew Bigg, Reuters Atlanta bureau chief; Commissioner Massa Washington of the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission; Pewee Flomoku, former Associated Press photojournalist; William Burke, CNN producer; and Siahyonkron Nyanseor, editor of The Perspective, a Diaspora-based Liberian news source. Isha Sesay, host of CNN International’s Inside Africa, will moderate the event.
The event is free, but reservations are required by responding to firstname.lastname@example.org. Seating is limited so reserve early.
