Who Will Own the Forest? Summit 2009

Sutherland Partner William H. Bradley is speaking at the World Forestry Center’s annual "Who Will Own the Forest?" Summit, September 14-16, 2009, in Portland, Oregon. Bill is moderating a panel that will be presenting an open and informal discussion on "What's Next?"  Over the past 25 years, there has been a sea change in the ownership of U.S. timberlands as the integrated forest products companies have sold their holdings and financial investors have come to dominate the sector.  But what will the next wave bring, as the current funds mature, and these investors expect to liquidate their portfolios? Will the expected influx of foreign investors materialize? Are there other buyers waiting in the wings? Will existing funds postpone their planned liquidity event? Will a secondary market for fund interests develop? What about the public company option?

Sutherland is also a proud sponsor of the Summit, which brings together investors and the forest sector to discuss the dynamic opportunities and implications of investing in forestlands. The 2009 Summit is expected to bring new challenges and raise more questions. How has the credit crunch affected land deals? How will forestland values trend in this market? How should carbon, biofuels and other nontimber values impact forestland appraisals? Where are investors going in search of more affordable properties? Will investors stay the course?
