An amended bill attempting to control LNG vessel transit in Rhode Island was approved by the Rhode Island House Environment and Natural Resources Committee yesterday evening. If passed, the legislation proposed by Rep. Raymond Gallison (D-Bristol) would create an exclusion zone around LNG vessels. No people, piers, flammable materials or facilities on state lands could be located within the proposed exclusion zone. “Federal law very clearly gives Rhode Island the right to say what we think isn’t safe in our waters,” said Gallison, who chairs the Special House Commission to Study the Transportation of Liquefied Natural Gas. The Associated Press reports in an article carried via LexisNexis [subscription required] and the text of the bill is available here.
