The Maryland House last week passed two bills that would prevent the Prince George’s County District Council from “granting a special exception” for an LNG storage facility without a three-fourths majority vote. The legislation could impact WGL’s plan to build an LNG storage tank in Chillum, Md. Delegate John F. Wood Jr. (D-Dist. 29A) of Mechanicsville had asked to delay the House vote because of concerns that utility bills will increase if the storage tank is not built. However, critics of WGL’s proposal expressed approval of the measure. “We’re not opposed to LNG as an energy source,” said Megan Lewis of the Sierra Club. “We are against it because of its location in the middle of a residential area.” Read more in today’s edition of The Gazette.
