U.S. Rep. C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger (D-MD) says that plans to build an LNG terminal in Sparrows Point, Md. would undermine neighborhood revitalization efforts and lower property values in the area. “I’d be very much concerned that people wouldn’t want to move or invest in an area where there was a large LNG facility,” said Ruppersberger, who represents portions of Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford Counties. Aaron Samson, managing director of LNG projects for AES, expressed disappointment over Ruppersberger’s remarks. “We are confident that if we can continue this open dialogue, we can address all the issues that have come up, particularly with respect to safety, dredging, and the impact LNG ship traffic might have on recreational and commercial fishing and boating,” Samson said. AES anticipates that the Sparrows Point LNG terminal, which is expected to come online in 2010, will generate between $3 and $5 million in county property taxes. Yesterday’s Baltimore Business Journal has the report.
