Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) confirmed yesterday that a recent test of its “mobile LNG cold ironing” technology at the Port of Oakland was successful in lowering the emissions of docked vessels. The technology allows ships to turn off their diesel or bunker oil engines while docked and use LNG-powered generators for the electricity required for onboard operations. PG&E reports significant reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur oxide during the July 18 test. The San Francisco Sentinel provides further details.
