Lawyers Weigh In On Obama 'Patent Troll' Initiatives

June 5, 2013

Law 360

Sutherland Partner Ann Fort was featured in a Law360 article regarding President Barack Obama’s legislative and executive proposals aimed at curbing frivolous lawsuits by non-practicing entities, also known as “patent trolls.” Ann, who has litigated against copier-scanner patent claims by the non-practicing entity Project Paperless/MPHJ Technology Investments, knows firsthand the havoc infringement claims cause for small-business end users. Although the effectiveness of Obama’s proposals remains to be seen, Ann believes the biggest impact may be the influence on public opinion. “Reforms will happen only if public pressure forces all participants in this system to confront the ways in which it is failing our economic interests,” said Ann. “Every news story covering the executive order keeps public and policymaker attention on the defects in our patent enforcement system."
