Sutherland Scholars Graduates 2011 Class

July 7, 2011

WASHINGTON AND ATLANTA (July 7, 2011) – Now better equipped to tackle law school, 38 students this month will graduate from Sutherland Scholars, a unique educational program sponsored by Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP designed to assist diverse students. The free, competitive program selects underrepresented law school students and prepares them for the rigors of law school.

"Statistics show that one in four law students is a student of color, but fewer than one in six associates at large law firms are lawyers of color," said James L. Henderson III, Sutherland's Chief Diversity Officer. "To better level the playing field, we created Sutherland Scholars. Through the program, students who might normally struggle initially in law school get a jump start and learn the basics to succeed."

This year, the Sutherland Scholars program was held in Washington D.C. and Atlanta. Students who attended the program graduated from Howard University, Morehouse College, Corcoran College of Art & Design, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Spelman College.

Under the auspices of Sutherland’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, in 2005 the firm decided it was important to begin helping talented college students prepare for law school. Spearheaded by Partner Allegra J. Lawrence- Hardy, former firmwide Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair and Executive Committee Member, the Sutherland Scholars program is an initiative to help ensure the success of underrepresented law school students.

Since its inception, more than 250 students have attended Sutherland Scholars which is offered every summer. The curriculum is broken down into 11 evening sessions covering topics that include legal writing, legal research, how to study for final exams, how to brief a case, and business etiquette.

Classes are taught by Sutherland attorneys and guest speakers, who practice law in a wide range of contexts. Some guest speakers have included a Deputy General Counsel from Sallie Mae, the Chief of the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, a professor from Georgetown University Law Center, and a presiding justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.
