Former Trademark Counsel to The Coca-Cola Company, James H. Johnson, Jr., Joins Sutherland Asbill & Brennan

September 15, 2003

ATLANTA (September 15, 2003) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP today announced that James H. Johnson, Jr. has joined the firm's Intellectual Property Group as Of Counsel.  His practice will focus on trademarks and service marks.  Mr. Johnson most recently served as Partner at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, L.L.P. and prior to that as Trademark Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company.

"Jim brings to us a wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of trademark, unfair competition and domain name disputes," said James L. Henderson, III, Sutherland's firm wide Managing Partner.  "We feel extremely fortunate to have him join us."

Mr. Johnson was named one of America's top minority intellectual property attorneys in the May/June 2003 issue of Diversity and the Bar.  With 24 years of experience in all aspects of trademark matters, Mr. Johnson's experience includes preparing, filing and prosecuting trademark applications through the opposition and appeal processes; negotiating and drafting settlement agreements; handling infringements and oppositions; and handling clearance opinion memos and strategies.

While at the Atlanta office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, L.L.P. from 2000 to 2003, Mr. Johnson was responsible for domestic and international trademark matters for Fortune 500 companies.  Some of his major accomplishments during his time at Finnegan Henderson included preparing due diligence opinions for domestic and international acquisitions for many large clients and preparing an infringement analysis for a major automaker.

As Trademark Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company, also in Atlanta, from 1987 to 2000, Mr. Johnson counseled his colleagues on proper trademark use and company policy.  While there, he successfully updated the company's domestic and international trademark policy manuals and revamped and administered the employee trademark orientation program.  As well, he successfully resolved Coke's first internet cybersquatting case.

Prior to joining Coke, Mr. Johnson gained extensive trademark experience at Kellogg Company as Senior Trademark Counsel and at The United States Patent and Trademark Office as an Examining Attorney.  He is a graduate of Princeton University and University of Virginia School of Law.

Mr. Johnson lectures regularly on trademark and general intellectual property law principles to a variety of audiences, including major corporations' in-house marketing staff and attorneys.
