Jamala S. McFadden Selected as Sutherland's First Thrower Fellow

January 27, 2004

ATLANTA (January 27, 2004) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that attorney Jamala S. McFadden has been selected to serve at Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. for the firm's first Thrower Fellowship.

The Thrower Fellowship, named after Sutherland legend Randolph Thrower, was developed by Sutherland partners Charlie Lester and Judy O'Brien, in conjunction with the firm's 75th Anniversary.  The purpose of the Fellowship is for Sutherland to offer free legal services to those in the community who may otherwise not be able to afford legal help.

"The Thrower Fellowship underscores the firm's commitment to pro bono service," says Ms. McFadden.  "At the same time, the fellowship gives me the incredible opportunity to receive courtroom and practical experience."  Ms. McFadden adds, "this is truly a valuable experience, both professionally and personally."

"Jamala is an outstanding young lawyer and is a worthy representative of our firm as the first Thrower Fellow," says Mr. Lester.

At Atlanta Legal Aid, Ms. McFadden represents clients in bankruptcy, family law, unemployment benefits, and landlord-tenant matters.  Ms. McFadden also is responsible for periodically staffing the DeKalb Family Law Information Center and the Women's Resource Center.  Her four-month fellowship takes place at Atlanta Legal Aid Society's office in Decatur.

At Sutherland, Ms. McFadden focuses her practice on general litigation with a specialty in labor and employment law.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction at the University of Illinois and her J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School.  After law school, Ms. McFadden served as a law clerk for the Honorable Anna Diggs Taylor in the U.S. District Court.

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society has represented Atlanta's underprivileged in civil legal cases since 1924.  The attorneys at Atlanta Legal Aid help their clients deal with some of life's most basic needs such as a safe home, enough food to eat, a decent education, protection against fraud, and personal safety.
