Olivia Shay-Byrne and Philip Fick Join Washington Office Tax Group

WASHINGTON (June 14, 1999) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Olivia Shay-Byrne and Philip J. Fick have joined the Washington Office Tax Group. Ms. Shay-Byrne, a partner, and Mr. Fick, an associate, handle corporate tax and public finance matters for tax-exempt organizations.

Ms. Shay-Byrne joins Sutherland from Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, P.A., where she was a Partner and Chairperson of the Bond Department. A recognized expert in the law of nonprofit organizations and taxation, she represents many not-for-profit organizations and assists them in acquiring tax-exempt bonds. In this capacity, she has over fourteen years of experience representing many different types of nonprofit organizations from museums to hospitals, nursing homes and schools. She has also represented many corporate and individual clients before the Internal Revenue Service in Baltimore and at the Service's National Office in Washington, DC, and has successfully participated in many audits concerning a variety of tax issues.Ms. Shay-Byrne is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the ABA Committee on Tax Exempt Bonds and a Board Member of the Exempt Organization Tax Review Advisory Board. She is a frequent speaker and has written extensively on the topic of tax-exempt bonds and tax related matters. Ms. Shay-Byrne received her LL.M. in Tax from Georgetown University Law Center in 1987 and her B.A. from Bowdoin College in 1979.

Mr. Fick joins the firm from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he was a Senior Tax Associate working on tax-exempt organization matters. Prior to working at PwC, Mr. Fick was a Manager of Financial Reporting (1991-1997) and a Financial Analyst (1989-1991) at the American Red Cross, National Headquarters. Mr. Fick received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1998 and his B.B.A., cum laude, from St. Louis University in 1978. While at Georgetown University, he served as Executive Editor of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics. Mr. Fick is also a Certified Public Accountant.
