WASHINGTON (June 24, 2008) – Sutherland announces the publication of Partner Jeffrey P. Bialos' book, Ideas for America’s Future: Core Elements of a New National Security Strategy (published by the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies). The book is focused on the challenges the next U.S. president will face in shaping a post-Iraq national security strategy.
Mr. Bialos and his co-contributors, Stuart Koehl, David Catarious and Suzanne Spaulding, examine, among other things, how the country will “rebalance" its national security investment portfolio, adjust to the emerging multi-polar world, and realign security capabilities to address the broad range of low intensity threats likely to be prevalent – ranging from insurgency to stabilization and reconstruction to tsunamis. The authors offer a new national security paradigm with three overarching conceptual approaches, six core policy ideas and six approaches to revitalizing our government’s national security “toolbox" – civilian and military.
“This book is designed to stimulate debate and thinking on these important issues as the next president takes office," said Mr. Bialos.
General Wesley K. Clark (Retired) authored the book’s preface. “Jeff Bialos and his collaborators have developed a range of fresh and innovative ideas that cut to the core of the national security debate this country ought to have …," he said.
Mr. Bialos brings the unique perspective to the study from having served in senior positions at three U.S. government departments with national security responsibilities – the Departments of Commerce, Defense and State. Most recently he was Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Industrial Affairs. Mr. Bialos has broad legal and government experience in aerospace, defense, homeland security, international and national security matters, including mergers and acquisitions, antitrust, procurement, export controls, Exon-Florio reviews of foreign investments, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Since 2006, Mr. Bialos has served as a member of a Defense Science Board Task Force examining the future of the U.S. defense industry.
Mr. Bialos is available for interviews and copies of the book will be available to the press for review beginning June 25, 2008. You can reach him at 202.383.0363 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
On June 26, Johns Hopkins University hosted a book launch event at which Mr. Bialos and General Clark spoke. To learn more about the event, visit sais-jhu.edu.
