Sutherland 2010 Pro Bono Hours Add Up for Worthwhile Causes

April 27, 2011

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (April 27, 2011)Sutherland Asbill and Brennan LLP today announced that in 2010 the firm’s attorneys spent more than 15,500 hours on 356 pro bono matters. The cases, which ranged from contract disputes to high-profile civil rights violations, assisted dozens of individual causes throughout the world.

“In recent years, pro bono efforts have become increasingly important to nonprofits as they struggle to adapt to the economy," said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “I am proud to say that in 2010 Sutherland continued its long tradition of sharing talent and knowledge to help those who need legal aid but cannot afford it. Many of our attorneys averaged 100 hours despite carrying intense caseloads."

At Sutherland’s annual pro bono awards receptions this month, the firm recognized two attorneys and one practice group for exceptional service. Lawrence A. Dany III, Lewis S. Wiener and the IP Practice Group received the Charles T. Lester, Jr. Pro Bono Award for significant contributions to Sutherland’s 2010 pro bono efforts.

Pro bono highlights for 2010 include:

  • Sutherland attorneys partnered with the Justice Department, the National Association for the Deaf and the Washington Lawyers’ Committee to reach a settlement that will improve national standards in communication between medical providers and the deaf community. The settlement was the result of a case in which Sutherland represented deaf patients who were not provided adequate communication in an emergency situation.
  • Sutherland lawyers worked with the Prosperity Campaign of the Atlanta Community Food Bank to establish a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in the Atlanta area to help low-income families prepare federal and state income tax returns.
  • Sutherland partnered with the Advocates for Human Rights to examine widespread violence against “the girl child,’ domestic violence in the Croatian legal system, and the mistreatment of Zimbabweans.

Created in January 2008, the honor was named after former Sutherland Partner Charlie Lester who inspired countless lawyers to provide free legal representation to those in need. For the past five years, the award has been given annually to attorneys who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to pro bono and community service.
