ATLANTA (June 22, 1999) – At the Atlanta Legal Aid Society's 75th Anniversary Celebration on June 8, James L. Henderson, III, Managing Partner of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, announced the firm's commitment to sponsor an annual Atlanta Legal Aid Fellow. The Randolph W. Thrower Fellowship is a tribute to Randolph W. Thrower, a Sutherland partner and counselor and advocate of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.
A Randolph W. Thrower Fellow will be selected each year, beginning in 2000, from among the firm's most outstanding associates. This associate will work for Legal Aid for at least four months while receiving full salary and support from Sutherland. Fellows will work directly with Legal Aid clients on emergency matters and will have the opportunity to participate in the entire litigation process.
"I am proud of Sutherland's increased commitment to pro bono work with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society," Mr. Thrower commented. "I look forward to the opportunity to build stronger ties between our organizations which are both celebrating their 75th Anniversaries this year."
Thrower has been actively involved in the Atlanta Legal Aid Society for more than fifty years. He served as President in 1953 and was chosen to lead the first Annual Campaign in 1983. Thrower received his undergraduate and law degrees from Emory University, and was awarded an honorary LL.D. in 1984. He has served as a Trustee on the Boards of several colleges and universities and served as Chair of the Ethics Committee of the City of Atlanta from 1980 until 1992 and as Commissioner of Internal Revenue, 1969-1971. He joined Sutherland in 1936.
The Atlanta Legal Aid Society has represented Atlanta's poor in civil legal cases since 1924. Its mission is to ensure that justice be equal for rich and poor by providing legal advice and representation for people who otherwise could not afford legal counsel.
