ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (May 13, 2009) – Today, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP formally announces its firmwide sustainability initiative to significantly reduce waste and promote conservation of energy and resources.
“Being a good steward of resources has always been a deeply held value to Sutherland, and the efforts of our sustainability initiative support our ongoing commitment to our communities," said Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “We are taking steps to protect our environment, and our Sustainability Task Force is leading us to adopt more sustainable practices not only at the firm but also in our daily lives."
Sutherland’s sustainability efforts first took root in 2008 with the formation of a multidisciplinary team, the Sustainability Committee. Their leadership efforts are supported by a larger Sustainability Task Force, whose 60-plus self-appointed members represent partners, associates, legal assistants, secretaries, and other staff from the firm’s facilities, support services, research services, accounting and marketing departments.
Among the firm’s sustainability milestones to date:
The firm has purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) from firm client Sterling Planet, representing 100% of Sutherland’s estimated annual electricity use. These certificates represent electricity that has been generated by a renewable source. The firm has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a member of its “Green Power Partnership" for its efforts to reduce the risk of climate change through green power purchasing.
Sutherland has recently joined the American Bar Association-Environmental Protection Agency (ABA-EPA) Law Office Climate Challenge, a voluntary program that encourages law firms to improve energy efficiency, use renewable energy and reduce paper consumption.
Within the firm, Sutherland has created a “Do One Thing Differently" campaign, which challenges attorneys and staff in all offices to modify one aspect of their behavior every two weeks in order to build a more sustainable culture. For example, the campaign encourages the use of reusable coffee mugs and reusable water bottles instead of disposable cups.
The firm now uses 30% post-consumer waste recycled copy paper and letterhead in all of its offices. All employees are encouraged to print materials two-sided. In 2008, Sutherland reduced its use of paper holiday cards by 75% through the implementation of an electronic holiday greeting.
Sutherland has worked with each office’s building management to adopt energy-efficient lighting and temperature settings. Other steps toward energy efficiency include reducing the number of printers and reducing time for printers and computers to switch to “sleep" mode.
“We continue to find ways to encourage the reduction of waste and promotion of sustainability," said Thomas H. Warren, co-chair of Sutherland’s Sustainability Initiative and a partner in the firm’s Energy Practice Group. “Small changes quickly add up to make big differences."
