Sutherland Announces New Executive Committee Members

WASHINGTON (May 26, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Reginald J. Clark (51) and Nicholas T. Christakos (48) were elected to the firm’s Executive Committee.  Announced at the firm’s annual Partners’ Meeting that took place earlier this month in Annapolis, MD, both partners will serve a three-year term.

Mr. Clark and Mr. Christakos will join current Executive Committee members John H. Fleming (57), Keith R. McCrea (57), David A. Massey (46), and Mark D. Wasserman (44).

Thomas A. Gick of the Tax group in Washington, and James L. Henderson, III of the Corporate group in Atlanta completed their terms as of April 2004. 

"Reggie and Nick are tremendously skilled lawyers with outstanding leadership qualities,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Managing Partner.  “We are excited to have them on the committee as they will contribute greatly to the strategic direction of our firm.”

Mr. Clark, Deputy practice group leader for the firm’s tax practice, is experienced in handling tax controversies and representing clients before the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service in connection with requests for rulings or technical advice.  He also regularly advises university endowment funds on tax and legal issues associated with their investment activities.  Mr. Clark is a former Adjunct Professor of Law in the Emory University School of Law’s Graduate Tax Program and is a current trustee of the Southern Federal Tax Institute and Georgia Federal Tax Conference.  He was also recently appointed Chair of the Committee on Corporate Tax for the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation for 2005-2006 and has been recognized in Atlanta Magazine’s 2004 and 2005 Georgia Super Lawyers in the area of Tax.  Mr. Clark received his J.D., with distinction, from Duke University School of Law.

Mr. Christakos leads the firm’s financial services litigation team, but his litigation experience is broad-based, covering several substantive areas, including insurance, reinsurance, automotive franchise, Racketeer Influenced & Corrupt Organizations Act, Employee Retirement Income Security Act, employment law and general contract disputes.  Mr. Christakos is active in a variety of public service and community activities, of a legal and nonlegal nature.  He serves as Counsel to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and has served as President of the Harvard Club of Washington, D.C. and a Regional Director of the Harvard Alumni Association.  He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, an affiliate of the American Association for World Health, and was a member of the Executive Committee for the Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth International Conferences on Nutrition & Fitness, held in Greece in May 1992, May 1996, May 2000 and June 2004.  Mr. Christakos received his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.
