Sutherland Announces New Partners and Counsel

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (January 12, 2011) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces the election of eight new partners and four new counsel effective January 1, 2011. “Each of these attorneys has provided superb service to our clients, and we are certain they will play a large role in the firm’s future success," said Sutherland’s Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman.

From our Corporate Practice Group:
Daphne G. Frydman concentrates her practice on financing transactions, public and private securities offerings, and mergers and acquisitions for financial services clients. She has significant experience working with insurance companies on structured financial transactions and captive insurance companies. Recently, Daphne has advised a major insurance company on life insurance reserve securitization transactions. She has also represented a major commodity pool operator that offers its exchange-traded products and a government-sponsored enterprise on disclosure and distribution issues in its multibillion-dollar debt programs. In addition, she has counseled financial services clients on the impact of financial regulatory reform under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Daphne resides in the Washington, D.C., office.

From our Intellectual Property Practice Group:
Jeffrey D. Blake handles all aspects of intellectual property litigation and counseling, with extensive litigation experience in both electrical arts and pharmaceuticals. He has represented major pharmaceutical and electronics companies in federal district courts and appeals courts as well as Section 337 actions before the United States International Trade Commission. Jeff resides in the Atlanta office.

Christopher J. Chan counsels clients in all facets of patent law including international and domestic portfolio management and strategy, patent procurement, opinions and clearance studies, due diligence, licensing and related litigation. Chris has helped Fortune 100 companies implement patent procurement strategies and has also counseled numerous early stage start-up companies in developing comprehensive intellectual property strategies. Chris resides in the Atlanta office.

From our Litigation Practice Group:
Lawrence A. Dany III focuses his practice on commercial litigation and arbitration, with an emphasis on the construction industry. He represents construction managers, general contractors and their surety companies in litigation and mediation of disputes related to complex construction projects. He also assists clients in avoiding disputes by providing advice on contract administration and claim avoidance. Larry resides in the New York office.  

Olga Greenberg defends clients in securities litigation and enforcement matters involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and state regulatory agencies. Her clients include corporations, investment advisers, broker-dealers, registered representatives and corporate officers. Olga resides in the Atlanta office.

Gregory S. Kaufman concentrates his practice in securities litigation and regulatory enforcement. He has represented companies and individuals against the SEC, FINRA and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) in both litigation and enforcement actions. He has a special focus on e-discovery issues and is a member of the firm’s Electronic Discovery Committee. Greg resides in the Washington, D.C., office.

Felicia Harris Kyle focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation matters involving energy, employment, contract, trade secret, business tort and product liability issues. She has represented local, national and international companies and has tried cases in federal and state courts and through the American Arbitration Association. Her achievements include successfully resolving a contract dispute for a Hong Kong-based company involving a governmental project located in China. Felicia resides in the Houston office.

From our Tax Practice Group:
Amish M. Shah represents taxpayers in tax planning, audit and litigation matters. He has advised clients on the tax consequences of acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings and on other transactional tax matters involving both domestic and foreign entities. He has also represented clients under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examination, negotiated settlements with IRS appeals offices throughout the country and litigated cases. Amish has also advised clients on the tax aspects of, and available governmental incentives for, solar, wind and other renewable energy project development. Amish resides in the Washington, D.C., office.

Christina B. Rissler handles matters involving secured and unsecured commercial lending and structured finance. Her experience includes senior, second lien and subordinated financings; utility financings; working capital and leveraged acquisition financings; accounts receivable financings; agricultural lending; project finance; lines of credit; letter of credit transactions; securitization; and loan syndications and participations. Christina resides in the Atlanta office.

From our Tax Practice Group:
Jonathan A. Feldman represents clients in all areas of state and local taxation including income, franchise, sales and use, and property taxes. He has counseled companies in the manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, entertainment and retail industries. Recently, Jonathan has successfully litigated a sales tax matter before the Georgia Court of Appeals, received a favorable ruling with regard to amicus briefs filed in a tax matter before the Ohio Supreme Court, and represented a coalition of Georgia industries to draft favorable Georgia sales tax regulations. Jonathan resides in the Atlanta office.

Pilar Mata concentrates her practice on state and local tax issues. She represents clients in tax controversies at the audit, administrative, trial and appellate levels and advises clients regarding the state and local tax consequences of various business transactions. Her work includes representing a Fortune 100 cable company in controversy matters in several states and advising an online travel intermediary regarding multistate tax litigation matters. Pilar resides in the Washington, D.C., office.

William R. Pauls focuses his practice on corporate tax matters, particularly in the insurance industry. He regularly advises clients with respect to the structuring of corporate reorganizations, stock and asset acquisitions and dispositions, spin-offs and split-offs, cross-border transactions, and corporate finance transactions, as well as with respect to the application of the consolidated return regulations. Recently, Bill was a part of the team representing a leading electronics manufacturer as tax counsel on its $1.25 billion acquisition of a telecommunications company. Bill resides in the Washington, D.C., office.
