Sutherland Expands State and Local Tax Practice, Bolstering Financial Services Depth

November 15, 2010

NEW YORK (November 15, 2010) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announced today that Jeffrey M. Serether has joined the firm as Of Counsel and Maria P. Eberle has joined as an Associate, both as part of the firm’s State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice in the New York office. The arrival of Mr. Serether and Ms. Eberle brings the total number of attorneys on the SALT team to 24 – one of the largest in the country – advising clients on a full spectrum of state and local tax issues including planning, compliance, controversy and litigation, and policy and legislative matters.

“The addition of Jeffrey and Maria enhances our already best in class SALT Practice and significantly bolsters our capabilities in the financial services sector," said Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman.

Formerly Director of State and Local Taxes at American International Group, Inc., Mr. Serether has more than 20 years of experience in state and local tax matters within the financial services industry. His practice focused on the management of state and local taxes, including planning, legislative and policy-related activities, controversy, and transactions. Previously, Mr. Serether was a Managing Director in the Financial Services State and Local Tax Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He also spent 15 years at Citibank, N.A. where, for most of those years, he led the state and local tax function.

Ms. Eberle joins Sutherland from Deloitte LLP where, as a Manager in Deloitte’s multistate tax group, she advised clients on planning and controversy matters related to income, franchise, and sales and use taxes. She also served as an adjunct professor of state and local tax at Quinnipiac University School of Law.

“We are very pleased to have Jeffrey and Maria join our practice. The experience they bring adds significant depth that will benefit our clients," said Jerome B. Libin, Practice Group Leader of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group.
