ATLANTA (September 17, 2003) – The American Lawyer magazine named Sutherland as one of the nation's top-tier law firms in its feature, The A-List. Additionally, the publication named Sutherland a pro bono powerhouse.
In an effort to provide a better benchmark rating of the nation's top law firms, The American Lawyer introduced its first A-List of U.S. law firms in the September 2003 issue. The AmLaw 200 were rated based on a calculation of four key values: revenue per lawyer (RPL), pro bono performance, associate satisfaction, and diversity. The American Lawyer considered RPL and pro bono to be the most important measures—firm financial health and commitment to those in need—and those scores were doubled. The firms were then ranked by their total scores. The Top 50 are the honored as the Top Quarter and the top 10% are named to The A-List. Sutherland is ranked 40th.
The American Lawyer also recognized Sutherland as one of the Am Law 200's Pro Bono Powerhouses. Scores in this category were calculated based on the percentage of a firm's average pro bono hours combined with the percentage of lawyers with more than 20 pro bono hours. Sutherland is ranked 14th overall.
