ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (April 14, 2010) – As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP has agreed to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) representing 100% of its estimated energy usage for 2010 and 2011 from Element Markets, LLC, a Houston-based greenhouse gas and renewable energy developer and supplier of environmental credits throughout North America. In 2009, Sutherland formally announced its firmwide sustainability commitment and became a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Green Power Partnership" and a 100% green power purchaser.
“As a firm, we have committed to significantly reduce waste and promote conservation of energy and resources, and purchasing RECs is one of the many ways we are fulfilling this commitment," said Sutherland’s Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman.
“Element Markets is pleased to assist Sutherland in its commitment to sustainability. It is encouraging to see this type of leadership regarding environmental responsibility in the legal community, and we are proud to be part of Sutherland’s effort," said Angela Schwarz, President and COO of Element Markets.
“We are excited to team up with our client Element Markets, a leader in supplying environmental commodities, to help us meet our commitment to conduct our practice in an environmentally sustainable manner," said Thomas H. Warren, Sutherland’s Sustainability Partner and Co-Chair of its Renewable and Alternative Energy Practice Team. “Purchasing RECs is an important part of our commitment to reduce our environmental impact while enhancing client service."
Highlights of Sutherland’s Sustainability Commitment include:
In 2009, the firm joined the American Bar Association-Environmental Protection Agency (ABA-EPA) Law Office Climate Challenge, a voluntary program that encourages law firms to improve energy efficiency, use renewable energy and reduce paper consumption. Each of Sutherland’s offices uses energy-efficient technology and has taken numerous steps to reduce paper consumption.
Within the firm, Sutherland has created a “Do One Thing Differently" campaign, which challenges attorneys and staff in all offices to modify one aspect of their behavior – at work and at home – every two weeks in order to build a more sustainable culture.
The firm initiated recycling programs within all offices, including a battery recycling program.
