Sutherland Rocks Battle of the Law Firm Bands - Firm Raises More Than $29,000 to Support Gifts for the Homeless, Inc

June 25, 2010

WASHINGTON (June 25, 2010) – On June 24, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP’s band Sutherland Comfort raised more than $29,000 and won Banding Together 2010: The Battle of the Law Firm Bands. The annual event supports Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. (GFTH), and this year, it collected more than $120,000, surpassing GFTH’s goal. 100% of the proceeds will help the homeless in the D.C. metro area.

“We are very proud to have been a part of this event," said Sutherland Partner and GFTH Board Member and Former President Carol A. Weiser, who helped organize Sutherland’s fundraising. “I thank everyone who rose to the challenge to support GFTH and Sutherland Comfort."

Sutherland Comfort includes Financial Services Associate Naseem Nixon (lead singer), Litigation Associate Wilson G. Barmeyer (bass guitar), Tax Associate Daniel M. Buchner (guitar), Financial Services Partner W. Thomas Conner (guitar), and Océ staff member Chris Lewis (drums). Recruiting Assistant Rachael K. Saltzman and Paralegal Amanda Hubert provided back-up vocals.

Gifts for the Homeless, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is a wholly volunteer-run organization that serves the homeless of the Washington, D.C. area in two ways. First, during the group's clothing drive each December, GFTH solicits used clothing from area law firms, corporate legal departments, and government legal personnel to donate to area shelters and transitional housing facilities. During each clothing drive, GFTH receives thousands of large bags of used clothing which are donated to more than 70 shelters, soup kitchens and transitional homes. Typically, more than 300 volunteers help sort and deliver the clothing donations - which include sweaters, coats, hats, gloves sleeping bags, blankets, pants, shoes, and boots - rendering much needed help for those in shelters and soup kitchens. Second, GFTH uses the money it raises to buy essential new clothing, such as socks, underwear, hats and gloves, for area homeless shelters.

Sutherland's win in the Battle of the Law Firm Bands has been covered by The Washington Post, Above the Law, The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times.
