Sutherland Supports Haiti Relief Efforts

January 15, 2010

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (January 15, 2010) – In response to the devastation caused by the 7.0 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Tuesday, January 12, the attorneys and staff of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP are raising money to support ServeHAITI, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, faith-based organization working together with the people of Grand Bois, Haiti, to achieve a better quality of life. ServeHAITI provides medical care and treatment to people residing in the mountains of Haiti through the operation of a medical facility and a water purification program. The organization will use Sutherland’s donations to purchase materials for their own volunteers or will donate these funds to credible organizations that are on the ground in the areas of greatest need.

Sutherland Partner Peter J. Anderson, ServeHAITI’s Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors, will travel to Haiti on Monday, January 18, along with a team of doctors. “We have received a significant amount of medicines and supplies that are needed immediately at the medical facility to provide emergent care," he said. “We will fly to the Dominican Republic but do not know what transportation will be available to us once we land. If we must, we will walk to ServeHAITI’s facility from the Dominican Republic border."

“Peter has worked with ServeHAITI for more than a decade, and we have long-recognized the importance of the organization’s service," said Sutherland’s Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “The aftermath of the earthquake has devastated Haiti, and ServeHAITI’s staff and facility are in greater demand, since they are on the ground to provide direct care to those in need following the earthquake’s devastation."

Fortunately, because of ServeHAITI’s remote location, the hospital facility was not harmed by the earthquake. Care provided by the hospital will be critical to individuals in Haiti and to the rebuilding of Port-au-Prince and other surrounding areas, especially as relief organizations struggle to enter the country due to extensive damage at the Port-au-Prince airport.

Mr. Anderson has been involved with ServeHAITI since its founding. With the support of his Sutherland partners, he travels to Haiti 5 to 6 weeks each year to work at the medical facility. “When we first began ServeHAITI, the residents were living in the 19th Century; they didn’t have running water, electricity or indoor plumbing," Mr. Anderson said.

In addition to medical treatment, ServeHAITI is creating a new way of life through educational programs, focusing on the importance of clean water, nutrition and general health. These programs also raise the awareness of the medical facility, which delivers approximately one child per day and treats at least one malnourished child per week.

As of Friday, January 15, 480 Sutherland employees have donated more than $23,500.  The firm will contribute at least $15,000. Donations continue to come in from Sutherland attorneys, staff, clients, and friends.
