WASHINGTON (March 28, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Todd A. Lard has joined the firm as an Associate in the firm's Tax Practice Group. Todd advises clients in the areas of state and local tax planning and controversy, including state income, telecommunications, and transactional taxes. Prior to joining the firm, Todd served as Tax Research Manager for Nextel Communications.
Sutherland's tax practice, one of the largest and most highly regarded in the country, has produced two former Commissioners of Internal Revenue and a former Chief Counsel of the IRS. Many partners and associates have held positions in the IRS, the Treasury Department, the Justice Department and the Joint Committee on Taxation of the U.S. Congress. Five partners have served as Chair of the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association. Another partner currently serves as President of the International Fiscal Association.
At Nextel, Todd focused his practice on tax legislation, planning and compliance work for the wireless telecom carrier. Previously, Todd practiced in the Washington National Tax Office of KPMG, where he advised on the tax consequences of various transactions implicating corporation income (franchise), sales, use, and other miscellaneous taxes. He also spent a year as a Graduate Tax Fellow at the Council of State Taxation.
Todd earned his J.D., summa cum laude, from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1997, and his LL.M. from Georgetown, with distinction, in 2000. He received his B.B.A. from Dallas Baptist University in 1994.
