ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (May 2, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP today announced that James L. Henderson, III has stepped down as Firmwide Managing Partner. The firm has named Mark D. Wasserman as his successor. The transition took place at the firm's Annual Partners' meeting at the end of April. Mark officially assumed his new post on Monday, May 2, the first business day following the meeting.
Two hundred more lawyers, several dynamic new practice areas, four new offices, the institution of numerous client service and professional development initiatives, continued leadership in the recruitment of young lawyers from law school and in the firm's pro bono efforts – these are just a few examples of the advances Sutherland has made during Jim Henderson's leadership of the firm. Jim was the firm's first Firmwide Managing Partner.
During Jim's nine-year term, Sutherland has experienced substantial growth in terms of client matters, lawyers and practice areas. The firm's Litigation Practice now boasts more than 125 lawyers, more than double the number of lawyers nine years ago. During Jim's tenure, Sutherland has developed an Intellectual Property Group, a Securities Enforcement and Litigation Group and has expanded substantially its Tax, Financial Services, Energy, Corporate and Real Estate Groups. The firm now has more than 425 lawyers in its six offices.
Jim continues to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Equal Justice Works, a D.C. based organization and the largest provider of postgraduate public interest law fellowships in the country. Additionally, he is a member of the Boards of Directors of The High Museum of Art and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
Jim will remain with the firm and, after a brief respite, will work on the expansion of its corporate and finance practices and the development of the New York office.
Sutherland has tapped Mark D. Wasserman to be the firm's next Firmwide Managing Partner. Mark is the co-chair of Sutherland's Corporate Transactional Practice and has been a member of the firm's Executive Committee for the past three years. "Jim has done an outstanding job of guiding Sutherland during a very tumultuous time in the legal industry," said Wasserman. "Sutherland is a stronger institution in terms of client service, breadth and depth of expertise, financial performance, professional development and community and pro bono commitment because of Jim's work and leadership. If I can accomplish a fraction of what Jim has done, I will consider my efforts successful." Jim and Mark are working closely with the firm's Executive Committee on the transition.
"Mark has already proven himself an exceptional leader in our firm," said Henderson. "He will undoubtedly ensure that Sutherland's commitment to excellent lawyering and service to our clients and the communities in which we live and work will be enhanced and extended."
Mark plans to continue the firm's focus on top-level client service, strategic growth, and pro bono and community involvement. "My goal is for Sutherland to continue to grow in a manner that is consistent with the needs of our national client base, while always performing client work and community service of the type that makes everyone proud to be a part of the firm," said Wasserman.
