Ana Rocio Monzón Woc (Rocio) represents clients in complex international disputes with a focus on investor-state arbitration and commercial arbitration.

Rocio’s experience includes acting as counsel in disputes and transactions involving parties from across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United Kingdom, Poland and Germany, and under the rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the American Arbitration Association (AAA).

Rocio also has experience in public international law matters, including Business and Human Rights. In addition, Rocio has experience in regulatory work related to international economic law, in particular advising Central American countries in trade policy matters. She has also been involved in the execution of international cooperation and development projects sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Union (EU) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Rocio also provides pro bono legal services to a variety of nonprofit organizations and causes, including the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, Her Justice, the Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG) and Amal Alliance, Inc., where she serves as Advisory Board member. She is a co-chair of the Affiliation of Latinx and Hispanic Attorneys (ALHA) at Eversheds Sutherland (US) and a mentor at the TotalLAW Prep Program aiming to increase diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Rocio teaches Private International Law at Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala.

Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Rocio worked as an associate in the International Dispute Resolution practice of a major global law firm in New York. Rocio also worked at the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) and at the CAFTA-DR Secretariat for Environmental Matters. 

During law school, Rocio participated in study abroad programs at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain); University of Pittsburgh, Touro College and University of Zagreb (Croatia); Columbia Law School, Amsterdam University and Leiden University (The Netherlands); and University of Barcelona (Spain). Rocio also participated in several international moot courts, namely the Phillip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition (national champion and participant at the International Rounds), the Willem C. Vis Moot Court Competition (participant) and the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (semi-finalist at the Final Oral Round). 

Rocio is qualified to practice in New York and Guatemala.

  • Representing an international consortium of energy producers in a AAA arbitration relating to a power plant dispute in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Advising a client in the marble mining sector on a multi-jurisdictional, multifaceted dispute resolution strategy for enforcing the client’s claims and rights arising out of a $50 million fraud in an Eastern European jurisdiction.
  • Advised a French national in connection with a $35 million potential investment treaty arbitration in the hospitality sector against a North African host State.
  • Represented a Global Fortune 500 German company and its subsidiary in an ICC arbitration related to construction work at a mega-project in Central America.
  • Represented a Brazilian company in an ICC arbitration related to defective and incomplete construction work at a solar power facility in South America.
  • Represented a Canadian investor in an investor-state arbitration against a South American Sovereign State, brought under the ICSID Rules and the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement over a dispute related to the gold mining sector.
  • Represented Champion Holding Company against the Arab Republic of Egypt under the US-Egypt Bilateral Investment Treaty brought under the ICSID Convention regarding the expropriation of the investor’s assets in several industries.
  • Representing Future Pipe International B.V. against the Arab Republic of Egypt under the Egypt-Netherlands Bilateral Investment brought under the ICSID Convention.
  • Representing a Cypriot mineral exploration company against the Republic of Poland under the Cyprus-Poland Bilateral Investment Treaty for the expropriation of a potash mining project.
