Jerry Libin advises U.S. and foreign-based corporations on the full scope of domestic and international corporate taxation. Chair of Eversheds Sutherland (US)'s Tax Practice Group, Jerry focuses on issues of tax controversy; tax planning; corporate acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings; and financial transactions involving domestic and international tax considerations. Jerry has successfully litigated a number of important federal tax cases and constitutional challenges to state tax statutes, including representation before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the ever-changing sphere of corporate taxation, Jerry brings decades of experience and innovation—a working knowledge of history and precedents combined with insight and strategic planning—to his clients’ specific tax issues and also to the broader arenas of legislation and policy making. He has dealt extensively with the U.S. Department of Treasury on a range of matters, including the revision of proposed regulations and the negotiation of tax treaty provisions, and has served as an informal adviser to the staff of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. As a consultant to the American Law Institute International Tax Study Project, he participated in the development of international tax proposals that became part of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. From 2001-2005, Jerry served as President of the International Fiscal Association (IFA), the largest professional organization in the world devoted exclusively to the study of international tax matters.
Before joining the firm, Jerry served as a law clerk to the Honorable Charles E. Whittaker, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
