Matthew V. Grumbling

Matt Grumbling counsels clients on intellectual property (IP) issues.

He focuses on all phases of patent portfolio strategy, including patent diligence and freedom-to-operate, patentability analysis, patent drafting and prosecution, IP procurement and licensing, and pre-litigation counseling.

Matt represents clients in a variety technology fields, including pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, and biologics; biochemistry, alternative medicine, and food science, with special emphasis on startup biotech and pharmaceutical technologies.

Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, he developed and executed patent strategy for multiple drug device and pharmaceutical clients. His clients have included public companies, as well as several startups, such as a medical device company specializing in artificial skin products (acquired for $12 million); a drug-device combination (acquired for $100 million), and a neuroscience-focused startup (acquired for about $400 million). Matt has also drafted numerous Hatch-Waxman Paragraph IV opinions and notice letters. 
 
He started his IP career at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he was a primary examiner in Group 1600, small molecule chemistry. In addition, Matt has experience as an electronics technician (ET) in the US Navy Reserve and as a chemical compounder in a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer.
